Do17 lost on 30th October 1939

I am trying to trace information on a Do17 that crashed at Sauvigny? France on 30th October 1939. The aircraft was from F/123 (a photo recce unit) with the W/Nr 4144. Any information as to the cause of the crash crew details etc greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Trevor

Yes, this Do 17P is P/O Mould´s victim (by the way, the first victory of BEF in France). It is WNr. 4414, 4U+BK, of 2.(F)/123 and its crew members were Hauptmann Balduin von Norman und Audenhove (Staffelkapitän of 2. Staffel), Oberleutnant Hermann Heisterberg and Fw. Friedrich Pfeuffer, all KIA.

Re: Do17 lost on 30th October 1939

Hello Remi,

I have found the Werknummer in an article devoted to the claim of P/O Mould written by Miroslav Snajdr and published in the Czech magazine HPM No. 2/2003 (which also contains a list of secondary sources). I assume the primary source for the Werknummer and the code can be e.g. the reports of the French gendarmerie from the crash site or the reports in the local press (after all, during the Sitzkrieg/Drole de guerre the air activity was not high and the wrecks could be often traced easily).

As far as the date is concerned, please note that the VDK site lists all the crew members as KIA on 30 October 1939, so I believe the date in the Verlustmeldung is probably incorrect (also, there is no matching RAF claim for 31 October).
