Insignia for 6./KG76 during the spring of 1940?

Hello,

I'm trying to locate a photo of an insignia for what I think is 6./KG76 during the spring of 1940, including the French Campaign, prior to the unit being re-designated from III./KG28. I think that I have a very distant shot of it that appears to be something like sunburst, with a dark image in the center, but I need a close up of this insignia. Does anyone have a photo of a Do17Z with this on the nose, or something that is known to be that unit's insignia? The insignia is pretty large and not small and subtle.

Thanx,

Hello,

I'm trying an experiment here to see if I can post an image of the above insignia. Bear with me if this gets screwed up.

Hi Larry!
I am not sure, but could it be an aircraft from KG 51 "Edelweiss"? I have read in the book on this geschwader by Wolfgang Dierich, that they also flew this type of aircraft. (Do 17)
Best wishes
Christian

Re: Insignia for 6./KG76 during the spring of 1940?

Christian,

Reasonable thought, as there is a lot of individual variation in the Edelwise insignias. However, this does not have a shield, and it is part of a whole staffel of Do17Zs, some of which appear to also have this insignia. The photo is taken under the nose of a French MS406C, so this has to be FC or BoB, and KG51 had only He111s by the beginning of the FC and progressively converted to the Ju88 as the campaign wore on. No Do17Zs at that time in KG51, certainly not a whole Staffel of them. The "F1" unit code on these is probable but not certain, as is the vertical colored band around the fuselage at the wing roots. I don't find anything like this insignia for a Do17 unit in any of the reference books and we really don't have good documentation of a Staffel insignia for 6./KG76 for this period, IIC. This particular aircraft appears to be "F1+CP," but again, this is not certain, especially the "F1."

Thanx,

Re: Insignia for 6./KG76 during the spring of 1940?

Andy,

Sure looks good to me! What is the context of this photo? Do you know a date, place and/or unit for this photo? It is obviously a force-landed aircraft. Is this a close up of a more complete photo? Any idea what the diagonal line is? That would possibly relate it to KG2. Does anybody know what this insignia depicts, and what is in the center of the design? Might this be F1+LP that I have FL at "Mingoval" France during the FC or BoB?

Wonderful pic of a problem I've been trying to solve for several years.

Thanks!

Re: Insignia for 6./KG76 during the spring of 1940?

Larry,

This was an image harvested from e-bay more than a year ago.

The image here was cropped slightly and processed via PSP and Photshop to try and draw out some more of the detail.

The coloured band (red?) appears to also have some white text which is, of course, indecypherable. I cannot recollect seeing KG2 coloured bands with white text - can you?

Unfortunately, the source image was quite small to start with.
