An old thread here on ToCH should be very helpful:

Correct. The old thread gives a lot of information. Just recently we have finally indentitified the grave of Fw. Peter Vogelbacher who was MIA. The combat was between IV./JG 54 and the 56th FG. The initial area of combat was Lochen-Laren and then moving northeast.

John.

Re: IV/JG 54 losses on 21 Sep 1944

In case it's of interest, there are a dozen or so Combat Reports for the 56th FG on 21 Sept 44 here:

(just scroll down a bit)

Re: IV/JG 54 losses on 21 Sep 1944

172678 is the number handwritten on the NVM for Fw. Bauer. However, this werknummer was also listed (handwritten on the NVM) for the loss of Oblt. Sosna on 21.7.1944. I do not know which one is correct.

Re: IV/JG 54 losses on 21 Sep 1944

IV./JG 54 (and III./JG 11) did not reach the landing zone area. The successes on the C-47's was from I. and II./JG 26

Frans, In Jochen Prien’s JFV 13/V it lists 172 676 as the Werk. Nr.

Thank all of you for your responses.

Re: IV/JG 54 losses on 21 Sep 1944

Perhaps Gerhard Stemmer can share his thoughts about this. I do not know any other primary source for the WNr of Fw. Bauer. So, imho, it is a guess what is correct.
