9./KG 4 Do 17 Losses 11 August 1940

According to Mason, and BOB Then and Now, plus the BOB Combat Archive, two Do 17Zs of 9./KG 4 were damaged in combat off Folkestone at approximately 13.40-13.45 on 11 August 1940, with one unnamed crew member killed and one wounded. I thought that III./KG 4 operated the Ju 88, while I and II./KG 4 operated He 111s. It is known that three Do 17Zs of 9./KG 2 were damaged during the same engagement, and are listed by the same sources, plus Balss and Balke's history of KG2. I assume that it is possible that 9./KG 4 was confused with 9./KG 2 by the original source for this. Any thoughts?

Re: 9./KG 4 Do 17 Losses 11 August 1940

Hello Peter,

according to the GQM loss returns on 11 Aug 1940 three Do 17 Z of 9./KG 2 were slightly damaged (two 5 %, one 8%).
Besides one member of the 9./KG 4 was wounded - oddly enough no aircraft type is mentioned. This man later died according to the correction of this entry from 29 Dec 1940.

Regards
Leo

Thanks Leo, I have those losses, clearly nothing for 9./KG 4.

Uffz Wilhelm Reimers EKM would indicate KG 2 so I think this is a typo

Hi guys

So, was Uffz Reimers the chap who was wounded on 11 August (and died 29 December)?

Stay safe
Brian

Hello Brian,

the 29 Dec 1940 is the date of the correction of the originally loss return (11 Aug 1940 9./KG 4 1 Verletzter), not the date of death.

Done some digging. Reimers (born 28 Mar 20) died 10 Dec 40 and is buried at Ysselstein which is unusual for a KG 2 loss. However, III./KG 4 was not a Do 17 unit. Closer examination his EKM appears to be 53538/43
