Encounter with an RAF Sunderland 9 AUG 1943

Sunderland Q of 201 Squadron under F/O L J Wilson RCAF reported on 9 August 1943 that they had exchanged fun fire with a Dornier Do217.

Would the identity of that Dornier be determined I wonder?

The Sunderland was patroling off and SW of the Brest Penninsula. Time in ORB of enchange was 22:00 hrs.

I guess it was most likely a Ju88 of V/KG40 ?

I do not know details of this, but many Do 217 were used in Maritime operatons, notably KG 40 and KG 100. Remember "Rome" was sunk by Do 217´s of KG 100 (lead by Major Bernhard Jope ex-KG 40), and KG 40 also had Do 217 E´s painted light gray overall, for maritime operations.

Probably II/KG 100 which was based at Cognac at that time-27 Aug 43 they attacked HMCS Athabascan. II/KG 40 had handed over its Do 217s June/July for Me 410s. Unlikely it could have been V/KG 40 as they rarely flew as singletons. Combat was not mentioned in the Coastal Command Intelligence Summary
