Re: II./ZG26 Kommandeure

Meyer & Stipdonk's Zerstörer-und Nachtjagdverbände Teil 4, p.43, lists Günther Weyl's dates in command as 23.Feb 1944 (succeeding Tratt) to 7.March 1944. The next Kommandeur listed, Hptm. Willy Elstermann, has June 1944 - 1.August 1944. This still leaves a gap of several months, and II/ZG 26 was redesignated II/JG 6 in July.

Re: II./ZG26 Losses 12-May-1944

Meyer & Stipdonk are in error....I have copies of both the Personalaktes of Weyl and Elstermann but unfortunately they are not conclusive. We know Hptm. Weyl signed the NVM of 30. June 1944 as Gr.Kdr. so he was still with the Gruppe then. Hptm. Elstermann signed the NVM of 11. July 1944 as Gr.Kdr. So, in between these dates the change of command took place. As the nomination of Hptm. Weyl as Kdr of I./ZG 101 on July 6th is pretty solid I believe that date is probably the most likely date. II./ZG 26 was renamed II./JG 6 on August 5th.

Regards,

John

II./ZG26 Losses 12-May-1944

GRM & John

Many thanks indeed for your respective help.

From that I conclude:

Hauptmann Günther Weyl 23-02-1944 – 06-07-1944

Regards Richard.

Re: II./ZG26 Losses 12-May-1944

Are there any photos of Gunther Weyl? I'm doing some research on the history of Illesheim AAF and Weyl was, insofar as I can tell, the last commander of the last flying unit that was based there. Disbanded on 15 Mar 45

I found one photo purported to be of him with what appears to be an ME-410.

I found the 1947 report of his death on 9 May 45, at Stredokluky bei Prag (Středokluky), present day Czech Republic. Location is just north of what is the current Prague Intl airport.

Pretty sad to be killed on the last day of the war.

There are not that many pictures of Hptm. Weyl. He indeed was shot by Czech on May 9th 1945.

His face and general posture match with what I have. You will be amazed how old some pilots looked like although they were only 25....

Re: II./ZG26 Losses 12-May-1944

Is there any information detailing why he was in Prague? Assuming when ZG101 was disbanded, personnel were reassigned?

From what I found, his home was in Sorau (Zary, Poland today) but this was already under Red Army control by mid-March, 1945.
