Re: Question for Spitfire experts
Hello Stig,
Re your question of the two flights using two same a/c. The answer is so simple. 1st flight Time Up - 14.45 hrs. Last a/c down - 16.00 hrs. 2nd flight Time Up - 17.25 hrs Last a/c down - 18.20 hrs. Also they had different pilots on the two flights. Alex |

Re: Question for Spitfire experts
It would be normal to have each aircraft allocated to a specific flight, and normally fly with that flight. However when needs called then any servicable aircraft would be used. It is perhaps a little unusual to have two such, but perhaps the squadron was going through a bad patch of servicability?

Re: Question for Spitfire experts
Hello Graham ,
I could be wrong but I believe that the squadron was about to or was in the process of gaining Mk.IX's. So that may have contributed to the use of them on the two flights on the one day. Quick turn around I would think, check/repair any visible damage, refuel and re-arm in one hour 25 mins, ? Just came across this in the ORB. Combat report for 20th March, next is Combat report for 25th. Further on in the documents is a list of pilots with flying hours/ops. P/O Simmons R.G.Missing 24th March. Have just seen in AHMAW VOL 2 pages 549-550, 24th March '43, that he and another pilot went down to strafe the airfield and that he was hit, WiA and then became PoW. ?
