Re: General Ju 88 thread

Also, while playing with the color and contrast on the picture, it seems that were is also some kind of shroud over the exhausts on in inboard side of the right engine.

Re: General Ju 88 thread

Hello Hedgehog6
and thanks for the explanation for the planned use of the plane but what I meant was that was the mods originally designed for the Oper. Eisenhammer and named after it. On the other hand the name of the mods might well have nothing to do with the Oper. Eisenhammer, as the Tokyo tanks on late B-17s had nothing to do with Tokyo or operations against Tokyo.

Re: General Ju 88 thread

Plane has flame damper on inboard right engine. Outer left might have it off at the moment. Nothing unusual. One practical detail shall be considered. Recce Ju 88 planes had extra oil and coolant tanks as standard in outer wing panels, for their longer range missions and all Ju 88´s could carry 50 kg marker bombs and flares in rear bay. Rear bay already had the needed racks for Pathfinder / Marker missions and nothing special about that.

Possibly flame dampers so the pilot is not blinded when flying at night.

I have never seen the outboard tanks on any Ju-88 except the KG66 ones preparing for Eisenhammer. The capability was always there, but NEVER used AFAIK. The use of the aft bomb bay for marker bombs & flares was standard. I think plumbing the inboard racks for drop tanks was standard - it was certainly common. I know of no official name for the combination of standard features, cammo and extra fuel on these aircraft. People just kind of know what you mean when you call them Eisenhammer mods. Marcel Van Heijkop is on this board sometimes. He is the guru of all that is KG66 related. He might know more, if you can attract his attention.

Outboard racks were used, I see then fitted now and then, only Ju 88s already were heavily loaded so no point in using them (weight had grown almost six tons since 1936) and I am expert on Ju 88, considering many amatörs commentin in here, and please stop write "Ju-88", thats so amatörish and revealing you probably know very little.

Re: General Ju 88 thread

Where has Artie Bob gone to? He was right down there with the Ju-88.

Re: General Ju 88 thread

Hello
checked from Alfred Price's The Last Year of the Luftwaffe, according to him the Oper. Eisenhammer was revived in revised form in Dec 1944 and re-scheduled for the following spring. "Under the revised plan, the Mistel combinations were to take off from a/fs in Eastern Prussia soon after dark and attack their targets simultaneously at first light the following morning. Junkers Ju 88s and Ju 188s from the I./KG 66 were to fly ahead of the Misteln, dropping flares to mark the route to target... Ju 90s and Ju 290s were to drop flares to illuminate the targets for attack. After the mission the Fw 190s were to land at a/fs in the Courland pocket..."

A the end of March 1945 the crews were briefed for the attack and during each of the next few afternoons they stood-to each evening, avaiting the executive order to launch the operation. On each day the weather was unfavourable and then the operation was cancelled.

No idea, I proposed co-op but was not accepted. Same happened, with a twist, with other rather selfminded mid-european article writer.

Having started in mid 1990s with blank sheet on Ju 88 production list, and them thousand(s) of manuscript pages I have today, I am at a loss of words on how these two books were a waste of effort, seriously. No author to this day has properly processed all the available info, and I do not pretend I can do this until after some more years, possibly.

Re: General Ju 88 thread

Ju 88 B V26 D-AUVS carried normal 250 kg racks under its wings (1940), found also outer-wing racks on A-4 301558 and further two Ju 88 S/T (numbers unknown) in similar scheme as S/T in question # but one is clear 500 kg (Fw 190) version but without tank.
