USS Santee : aimen in November 1942
Bonjour,
I bought this photo some 15 years ago during the air meeting of La Ferté Alais, South Paris. I know so few about the Far East airwar ... as I am studying airwar over Central France ...... but I found this photo remarkable. I do hope this will be of assistance for some researchers. The photo was taken in November 1942 on the deck of the aircraft carrier : USS Santee VC - 29 : it shows airmen and their name one the reverse side ... Re: USS Santee : aimen in November 1942
Merci beaucoup.
In November 1942, ACV-29 Santee (Cdr William D. Sample) was off the Moroccan coast (TORCH) during one week and returned to the Bermudas. LtCdr Joseph A. Ruddy was VGS-29's CO and the air group commander; the CO of VGF-29 was LtCdr John T. Blackburn of VF-17 fame. |

Re: USS Santee : aimen in November 1942
Just a couple of points on the VGS29 aircraft:
Schein's aircraft cannot have been 06442, as this was a TBF. I haven't been able to ascertain the correct BuNo, but the aircraft suffered only minor damage. Tower's aircraft was not 06555 as this crashed on take-off, 25 October, while flown by Ens. Ballentine. I think that Tower may have been in 06635, which was a November 1942 VGS29 loss for which no other details are available. Regards
