Udvar-Hazy Restoration Center Open House

For those of you who will be near Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Museum this Saturday Jan. 25, for the first time open to the public will be the restoration and archive area. You will be able to walk through the restoration shop, seeing the different shops ( machine, electrical, paint, etc. ) and then through the archival storage, conservation, and research areas. It is open from 10 AM to 3 PM Saturday. In the restoration shop among other aircraft are the Curtiss Helldiver ( in parts), the Kikka, and the Horten Ho-229 wings. In the conservation shop you see a piece of the deteriorating Horten wood.

Thanks for the notice.

I guess this used to be called the Garber Center, located at Silver Hill Maryland? If so, and you have never had the pleasure of a tour it is worth your time. The sight of machines you have heard of for years "hanging around" in shops is amazing. Even my non-airplane wife was impressed when I showed her the Enola Gay undergoing restoration.

Garber has been closed to tours for over 2 years now. All requests are directed to UHC.

AGAIN: Udvar-Hazy Restoration Center Open House

All:

Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Museum 2nd annual Restoration Shop open house will be on Saturday Jan. 24. The shop will open at 10 AM and the line to enter the shop will close at 3:00 PM. If you are in line by 3:00 PM, you will be able to access the areas. One will be able to visit the restoration shop floor, collections area, cold storage, preservation lab, and archive library.

If you live in the Washington DC area please try and visit. On the shop floor is the entire Flak Bait B-26 Marauder, but in many pieces. You will be able to talk with restoration staff. Kikka is in the collection area, and right now, depending on the weather, they say they are bringing the Ho-229 center section over from Garber and it will be viewable close up. The wings and other parts like the intakes, exhaust panels and canopy are already on the shop floor is various stages of preservation.

I will be there all day so please stop by and say hello if you find me.

Dear Tony,

Thanks for keeping us up to date. Wish I could see the Ho 229 in person. I'm just glad that it will be restored.

Regards,
Richard

Dear Tony,

I just tried signing up on LRG, but it requires my date of birth, which is a no-no. Too bad.

Richard

Re: Udvar-Hazy Restoration Center Open House

Open House #3 at Udvar-Hazy, Saturday January 30, 2016 from 10A to 3PM. In the shop will be Flak Bait, Ho229, Kikka, Sikorsky JRS-1, and the US Marines museum is closed for renovation so they have an SDB Dauntless almost completed, and a Vietnam War vet UH-34 in the Udvar-Hazy shop.

I will be there by the R-2800s of Flak Bait, so please stop by to say hello. I've spent this past year working on the left engine, now complete, and am working on the right one.

Tony
