OS2U-3 BuNo 5810 - loss discrepancies?
AAIR, Joe Baugher et al have OS2U-3 Kingfisher BuNo 5810 lost on 5 August 1942 while serving on the cruiser USS Cincinnati in the Atlantic.
Killed pilot is given as (no rank stated) Robert G. Long. No such loss or name in the war diary of that cruiser, apparently on her way to Norfolk, VA that day. However, on 5 July 1942 Ens. Robert G. Long (from Boise, Idaho) got killed in a plane crash in Alaska, with a newspaper in late August 1942 writing that his body was found 'in the Aleutian Islands'. Mix-up of accidents? I wonder what accident really caused the death of Ens. Long (and crew?) and perhaps real fate of BuNo 5810. Thanks for info. Regards, Leendert |
