Fw190 losses 08.03.1943

On this date 64 Squadron and 122 Squadron along with 403 Squadron encountered elements of JG2, JG27 and JG26. Two aircraft of 12./JG2 and one of 3./JG27 were apparently shot down.. the RAF Squadrons made claims for 5 Fw190. Can anyone give me details of the LW aircraft lost and the pilot casualties? It would appear that the JG2 and JG27 losses are misidentified as a Fw190 when I assume both were Bf109G-4....although 12./JG2 did have some Fw190A-3 but did not lose any to enemy action in March according to:

regards

Keith

Just an aside but the 2nd BW USAAF make claims of 14-3-3 on this mission....and therefore perhaps they should be credited with some of the losses suffered by the LW?

Re: Fw190 losses 08.03.1943

Thanks Michel. The more I read about this mission the less I understand. The LW apparently considered they had stopped the raid before they hit the target but the B-24s report they hit the target very successfully!

I may wrong but I do not think any unit of JG 27 ever flew 190s.

Fw 190 losses 08.03.1943

Hello Keith

According to Prien the losses suffered by JG 2 in the engagement you are interested in were:

Bf 109 G-4 (W.Nr. 14 984) of 12./JG 2 flown by Feldwebel Rudolf Holzmann, injured and baled out, crashed three kilometers west of Dieppe due to engine fire, 100%

Bf 109 G-4 (W.Nr. 14 990) of 12./JG 2 flown by an unknown pilot who baled out, crashed near Benesville due to engine fire, 100%

I have read that the Geschwaderstab of JG 27 did have some Fw 190 D-9 fighters on strength in the latter months of the war but I have no idea if this is correct or not.

Horrido!

Leo

Hi Keith,

Hugh Godefroy in his book "Lucky 13" gives a detailed account of shooting down a 190 on this mission escorting bombers to St.Lo.

JG2 had 2 Fw.190A-4's damaged on this date operating from Brest Nord :-
8/JG2. Fw.190A-4 (145735) 15%
8/JG2. Fw.190A-4 (152643) 10%
both in air combat

Fw 190 losses 08.03.1943

Hi Bruce

According to Prien those two aircraft were damaged on 8 April 1943.

Fw 190 A-5 (W.Nr. 0152 643) of 8./JG 2 flown by an unknown pilot, damaged in aerial combat, emergency landed at Brest, 15%

Fw 190 A-4 "Black 12" (W.Nr. 0145 735) of 8./JG 2 flown by an unknown pilot, belly landed at Brest, 10%

There exists a series of photographs of the latter machine often associated with Hauptmann Bruno Stolle (35 victories, RK).

Horrido!

Re: Fw190 losses 08.03.1943

Many thanks, chaps. I wonder if any of the losses on 8.3.43 were attributable to Spitfires? Misidentification did happen however (see my question on LW losses 28.8.42), but it is surprising considering the levels of experience possessed by Compton and Godefroy.
