Re: USAAF Squadron Codes

Thanks Jerry

That's worth a Mention in Despatches! At least a mention in the Acknowledgements of my book!

Cheers
Brian

Re: USAAF Squadron Codes

according to page 94 of :
Air Force Colors volume 2 ETO & MTO 1942-1945
by Dana Bell
the the 326 is a Bomb Squadron coded JW
(97 Bomb Group)
page 38 shows it as a white triangle painted on above the USAAF serial number and shows B-17F? 42-30267 'Hustlin' Huzzy'.

326 is probably a typographical error in your list?

Re: USAAF Squadron Codes

329 FS is (also) correct. It was part of 328th FG that flew P-39s from Hamilton Field, CA, 1942-1944.

All USAAF squadron codes on www.armyairforces.com

Re: USAAF Squadron Codes

Many thanks guys

I have rechecked the information sent to me, and it does state 326thFS/362ndFG - but on checking the website, I note that the person I was investigating was with the 377thFS/362ndFG!!

Thanks to your help I now have the correct details.

Cheers
Brian

Re: USAAF Squadron Codes

AH!
now we are making progress.
if you had mentioned earlier that you were researching the 362 FG then it would have been a lot easier.
the book that I mentioned earlier is laid out by group and that makes it very easy to find if you know the Group number first.

it lists the code for the 377 FS as E4
page 73 shows P-47's from Nov 44
379 FS with a yellow cowling 'lip'
378 FS with a blue cowling 'lip'
377 FS with a red cowling 'lip'
and from Feb 45 it shows a red tip to the fin/rudder and a black band below that. (appears to be a standard ETO band as applied to NMF planes)
