18 and 19 May 1940 over France
Hello,
What were the Luftwaffe losses on 18 and 19 May 1940 in France from 253 Squadron? A Do 17 4.(F)/11 piloted by Fw W. Hamman lost near Seclin in aerial combat near Lille with a Hurricane from 253 Sqn ? Thanks in advance George |

Re: 18 and 19 May 1940 over France
Good starting point would be claims:
18 May: 2 x He 111 dest one unconfirmed 1400hrs Bf 110 & Do 215 dest, 2 x Do 215 unconfirmed, Bf 110 damaged 1615-1630hrs 19 May: He 111 dest He 111 dam 1200hrs Bf 109 unconfirmed, Bf 109 damaged 1500hrs Mindful of what was going on those days, inaccurate records etc things will be hard to tie down when you look at all the other claims for other squadrons on those days |

Re: 18 and 19 May 1940 over France
Which matches time-wise with the second combat that day. It appears you have access to BofF T&N which is probably as good as you are going to get

Re: 18 and 19 May 1940 over France
The previous link to claims of No. 17 Sqn was based on the interpretation of Peter Cornwell in TBoFTaN.
However, I think Gillet's interpretation is much more accurate and plausible, which leads to the following loss description: May 18 4.(F)/11 Dornier Do17P-1. Shot down by Sgt Dymond of No. 111 Squadron during reconnaissance sortie over Vitry-en-Artois, and crashed into the ground causing a terrible explosion at Elverdinge, north of Ypres 7.00 p.m. BO Oberlt Oskar von Dolega-Kozierowski, FF Fw Conrad Wiegand, and BF Uffz Walter Hammann killed. Aircraft 100% write-off. |
