Canadian aircraft crash 4 November 1956
Hi,
I found the following in the Glasgow Herald dated 5th November 1956. Yesterday a Canadian aircraft was flying from Canda to France via Iceland. As it was overflying Fife, Scotland there was an explosion and the two man crew baled out. The crew were Flt Lt John Edwin Flannagan and Mr Marland. Flt Lt Flannagan suffered a dislocated shoulder while Mr Marland appears to have been uninjured. The aircraft came down near Kilmaron Castle, Cupar, Fife. So far I have been unable to identify the Canadian aircraft. Would anyone have any idea as to aircraft type and full identity of Mr Marland? Regards, Alex

Re: Canadian aircraft crash 4 November 1956
RCAF records show the date as 4 November 1956. Here is what my web page says about Canuck 18395:
Served with No. 428 Squadron, RCAF Station Uplands, Ontario, in 1956. Coded "HG*395". Lost while ferrying to Europe during Operation Nimble Bat 1, after controls froze over Scotland, 4 November 1956. Both crew ejected safely. Only Canuck lost in all 4 Nimble Bat missions. With No. 445 Squadron at the time. If Mr. Marland was a civilian, he may have been an Avro Canada employee. Edit: Just re-read the original post, thought the reported date was 5 November. My bad. |

Re: Canadian aircraft crash 4 November 1956
Hi Bill,
Thank you for the quick reply, many thanks. I've bookmarked your web site for future reference. I'm working on a list of all known air accidents/crashes for Fife, Scotland. I've been looking into this on and off for a few years now. It's slowly coming together. Regards, Alex
