1944 loss Bf 109 Wnr 20505 JG1
Dear all,
By concidence I stumbled upon a drawing made by the Dutch resistance. It concerns an apparently crash landed German aircraft on a trailer between Arnhem and Nijmegen at 2 February 1944. The following characteristics are shown on the drawing: * Appearance of a Bf 109 * Emblem of JG1 * fuselage code White 5+1 (1 on red band around rear end fuselage) * Wnr 20505 on tail * 3 victory marks of tail, 1 RAF aircraft, 2 USAAF aircraft I thought it would be fairly easy to figure out with these wealth of details at what date this aircraft made the crash landing. Or even to sort out which pilot may have flown this Bf 109 with regard to the victory marks. Unfortunately the database of crashed aircraft in The Netherlands of our Study Group Air War 1939-1945 doesn't provide a matching loss. The only one being close is an accident at 30th January 1944 at Ressen, North of Nijmegen. It concerned an unidentified Bf 109 of 9./JG1 flown by Uffz H Seynisch. However 9th Staffel didn't use white coded markings and Seynisch didn't had victories as far as I know or can look up. So I hope somebody has clue which ties up above details with a correct date and perhaps pilot? Thanks in advance for your effort, Hans |

It would be nice if we could see a copy of the said drawing to put the things into perspective. Even the low resolution would be fine.

Re: 1944 loss Bf 109 Wnr 20505 JG1
Hi all,
Attached the rather sketchy drawing. Just some translations of specific Dutch words: wit = white rood = red zwart = black geel = yellow The possible tie up with a Bf 109 of 9./JG1 originates from the Kriegstagebuch Flughafenbereich Gilze-Rijen: 31.1.44 15.00 Uhr Bauchlandung infolge Kraftstoffmangel einer Bf 109 bei Ressen, 6 km N Nijmegen. Flughalter (?) 9./III./JG1 Volkel. FF Uffz Helmuth Sainisch leicht verletzt. Bruchschaden 45% (belly landing owing to fuel shortage of a Bf 109 near Ressen, 6 kilometres north of Nijmegen. Unit (?) 9./III./JG1 of Volkel. Pilot Uffz Helmuth Sainisch slightly injured. Damage 45%) Note there is a small discrepancy between date and name. Regards, Hans |

Re: 1944 loss Bf 109 Wnr 20505 JG1
Hans,
I checked my records but can not find a 100% answer. At least the following is clear; 21.2.1944, 15.15 hrs, Bf 109G-6, 410141, gelbe 5, 9./JG 1 Uffz. Helmut Sainisch, geb. 05.01.1920 killed Shot down over IJsselmeer, washed ashore near A'dam, now Ysselsteyn CT-9-221. 31.1.1944, Bf 109, 9./JG 1, 45% Bruch near Ressen, 6 km N. Nijmegen Uffz. Helmut Sainisch, slightly injured. There were several crashlandings on 31.1.1944 so this must be one. Sainisch was injured and flew again on 21.2.1944 when he was killed. Early Feb. 1944, between Arnhem-Nijmegen, Bf 109G-6, WNr. 20505, white 5, 7./JG 1. Three vic markings, 1 British, 2 USA. Difficult but this should be a 7./JG 1 a/c as these had white numbers. Stab III./JG 1 is possible too, but i would expect higher number (20+). 7./JG 1 had one pilot with two US-kills by that date (Uffz. Wilhelm Kräuter), maybe he claimed a British one also, but this was not awarded? Hptm. Siegfried Luckenbach of Stab III./JG 1 had three victories by that date, one UK and two US but not in the sequence as indicated on the drawing.... My guess would be a crashlanding on 30.1.44 or 31.1.44. Cheers, John Last edited by John Manrho; 12th May 2015 at 23:07. Reason: typo |
