Luftwaffe ASR recoveries August/September 1949

Hi guys

Can anyone recommend any books/articles[/websites (in English or German) covering Luftwaffe ASR operations (recovery of Luftwaffe/RAF airman) during August/September 1940? Names, dates, reports of recoveries? Any suggestions appreciated.

Cheers
Brian

I think you asked this many moons ago. There was a general article on German ASR (by me and another by Karl Born) but never seen a list of rescues, dates or names

Hi Chris and others

That's the reason for my latest inquiry!

80-odd years after the epic battle, no further detailed information?

Cheers
Brian

Not many moons just 2 years!

It would appear that this will still remain unanswered unless Robert has managed to skim the files of which he mentions

BTW the war was well over by 1949.................

You can find summaries based on Y-Service intercepts in National Archives HW 13/28: "German Naval Air Activity Vol. II: Carrier- and land-based units (28 Dec 1939–31 Dec 1940)"

Re: Luftwaffe ASR recoveries August/September 1949

Brian,

BA/MA Signatur RL10 contains a number of files covering your date period. They may be of some help.

402 - 2.Seenotstaffel Kanal v. Cherb. 12.8.40 - 15.12.40
502 - Seenot.St. (Seenotflugkdo. 4) - Kriegstagebuch 22.08.1940-15.12.1940
533 - Seenot.St. (Seenotflugkdo. 3) - Auszüge aus dem Kriegstagebuch 05.09.1940-15.12.1940
534 - Seenot.St. (Seenotflugkdo. 5) - Kriegstagebuch 05.09.1940-15.12.1940

These are all digitised and can be downloaded via Invenio.

401 - 1.Seenotstaffel Brest-Süd 30.7.40 - 15.12.40 the catalogue entry implies that it covers your date period but actually the digitised copy does not cover Aug and Sep 1940.

Brian,

Karl Born has published a book "Rettung zwischen den Fronten. Seenotdienst der deutschen Luftwaffe 1939-1945", available via Abe Books for £ 11.63 + shipping!

Born's book is good but not as specific as to who picked up whom in August-September 1940
