POW Camp in Germany

Hi,

Does anybody will have the precise spelling of POW camp that I decipher as “Dulag Luft Obermesel.” (autumn 1944)

What was the name of POW camp close to Nuremberg in Feb1945 ?

TIA

Re: POW Camp in Germany

Isn't this Dulag Luft Oberursel near Frankfurt where Allied aircrew were interrogated after capture?

Re: POW Camp in Germany

DuLag Oberursel should be o.k. DuLag means "Durchgangslager" which significates only a transit stay until distributed to other POW camps.

As POW camp for Feb´45 there are several possibilties within Wehrkreis XIII - Nürnberg
- OfLag XIII B and StaLag XIII C at Hammelburg
- OfLag XIII D at Nürnberg-Langwasser
- StaLag XIII A at Sulzbach
- StaLag XIII B at Weiden
- StaLag XIII D at Nürnberg
(OfLag "Offizierslager"= camp for officers, StaLag "Stammlager" = camp for enlisted men and NCOs)
and for civil persons
- ILag XIII at Wülzburg/Weissenburg
(ILag "Internierungslager" = internment camp)

All camps are within 100 km from Nuremberg and within the timeframe.

Regards

Fran

Kriegsgefangenendurchgangslager Oberursel
Also as: Auswertestelle West Oberursel
Dulag Luft Oberursel

In operation as early as January 1940 in Oberursel/10.8 km north-west of Frankfurt/M. (Stadtmitte). Practically a suburb.
Dulag Luft Oberursel typically was staffed by 25-30 English-fluent Luftwaffe officers for detailed interrogations and another 15 to 18 for preliminary interrogations. By February 1944, the great inflow of Allied air force prisoners caused such a jamming of the facilities that the POWs were only there for a day or two and were only given a preliminary interrogation before being moved on to a permanent camp. Dulag Luft Oberursel was guarded by Landesschützen-Kp.d.Lw. 14/XVII (Hello Sgt. Schultz!). Details concerning Oberursel can be found in British Air Ministry interrogation reports ADI(K) 475/44 (8 pages) and ADI(K) 328/45 (27 pages). Below is a sampling of officers who served at Oberursel along with the four Kommandanten/Kommandeure (names underlined). Obstlt. Killinger was tried as a war criminal after the war as noted.

Thumbs up Re: POW Camp in Germany

Larry.

I read with interest Details concerning Oberursel can be found in British Air Ministry interrogation reports ADI(K) 475/44 (8 pages) and ADI(K) 328/45 (27 pages).

Can you advise me if within these records all prisoners interrogations will be found. I am seeking that of F/Lt Zuromski who was in Dulag Luft Aug Sept 1943

I look forward to your thoughts.
Thank you.

Over the past 12 years, there have been many, many discussions on internet forums about Auswertestelle West Oberursel. I have not read all of them, but as I recall the Luftwaffe interrogation records from there did survive the war. They were scooped up by AirMin/A.I.12 advance enemy document teams and whisked away and sequestered by the Allied intelligence community. Today these records reside in London and Washington but are closed to the public IAW the various Privacy Act laws of the U.K. and U.S. And rightly so. Can you imagine how embarrassing it would have been if a newspaper had gained access to these interrogations and revealed that so-and-so had been shot down, captured and taken to Oberursel where inside of three days he gave the Germans 50 pages of details about his squadron, group and air division? The individual would be labeled a traitor in his home town, his family's name smeared for all time and the guy's postwar career ruined.

As I understand it, sometimes individual records can be seen by filing a Freedom of Information Act request. If the individual is deceased, which is usually the case after the passage of 64 years, all or portions on the file can be released, albeit after heavy redacting. The requesting individual must document his or her need to see the file.
