Re: Lt. Günther Schmidt of NJG 5
Lt. Günter Schmidt of 2./NJG 5 and his radio/gunner, Uffz. Hans Leyendecker, were posted missing on 20 February 1944 when their Bf 110 G-4 WNr 5440 C9+AK did not return from a day battle against the 8th Air Force (that started its "Big Week" this day).
No loss place is known but the gunner was washed ashore on March 1944, so this crew was lost at sea, probably in the North Sea put possibly in the Baltic (given the base of I./NJG 5 then and the USAAF targets this day, both are possible). Source: Michael Balss NJG losses book |
