Re: Luftwaffe units in 1945

Your question is really to broad to answer properly. About the only Luftwaffe units not operating against the Soviets in the final stages of the war were those based in Norway and Italy. Almost everything else they had either was or could be switched between operations on both fronts as the Reich's territory became ever smaller.

It's probably safe to say that almost every type of combat aircraft still in Luftwaffe service saw some action on the eastern front, from biplanes to jets.

Re: Luftwaffe units in 1945

Hi

From a fighter aircraft point of view, those heavily involved at that time were(by memory):

JG 11, JG 4, JG 51, JG 52, JG 54, JG 77, EJG 1, JG 6, JG 3.

Also heavily involved were the Schlacht units, usually out-scoring the fighter units:-

SG 1, SG 2, SG 5, SG 10.

Highest scoring pilot was Günther Josten of JG 51.

Kind Regards

Johannes

Hello Delmenhorst, what a coincidence, a Russian researcher has just posted the order of battle of Luftflotte 6 for the same date (8 March 1945) on his blog! The link to the blog post is http://igor-ktb.livejournal.com/29567.html . The link to the order of battle itself is https://yadi.sk/i/drs3xWuJ32D5Xv .

May I ask whether this information comes from NARA Microfilm T321, Roll 50? If many people are drinking from the same source, that would explain why similar information is appearing in different places simultaneously.

Regards,

Paul

Re: Luftwaffe units in 1945

What you guys posted I am getting the same. I know luftflotte 6 station eastern Germany....and just got want I needed but a hell of lot of data that I will have to break down. I see luftflotte 10 (Berlin) but can not get anything on that.

I realized I left out one key question, what units cover eastern Germany?

OakTree, it would help if you wrote in clearer English. It is completely impossible to understand what you mean by "What you guys posted I am getting the same" and "but can not get anything on that". Please express your thoughts with greater clarity.

To get to the crux of your question, as I understand it:
Luftflotte 6 covered the central sector of the Eastern Front in 1945, see http://www.ww2.dk/air/hq/lfl6.htm and http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...uftflotte6.htm

Luftflotte 4 covered the southern sector of the Eastern Front - http://www.ww2.dk/air/hq/lfl4.htm and http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...uftflotte4.htm

Luftflotte 10 was a command formed late in the war to control training formations, rather than frontline units - http://www.ww2.dk/air/hq/lfl10.htm and http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...ftflotte10.htm

Take note, selected formations in Luftflotte 10, such as 9. Flieger-Division (J), were intended to be sent into combat in the final stages of the war. I believe this never occurred, but experts on the Luftwaffe in 1945 will be able to say much more.

Regards,

Paul

Delmenhorst, thank you very much indeed for sharing that extraordinarily detailed information Did you type all of that up yourself?

May I ask what Verfügbar means in the crew strength figures in this document, is it personnel present at the unit at the specific time that the strength report was compiled?

Regards,

Paul
