Ju 88A-4 of II./KG 1 lost on 10 july 1943
On 10 july 1943 Ju.88A-4 wr. nr. 5909 of the II./KG 1 made an emergency landing ditching in the sea west of Gallipoli (Italy) in the Ionian sea because of an engine fire.
Could anyone tell me the name of the crewmembers, their Staffel and fate, eventual additional informations about the history of this aircraft and the operational code it wore when it crashed (V4+..)? Thank you very much Buona Pasqua to everyone Gianandrea |

Re: Ju 88A-4 of II./KG 1 lost on 10 july 1943
Again about this aircraft.
In the Gen. Qu. record the location of the ditching is given as "westl. Gallipoli", without mention of the distance from that town. Matti, can you tell me the source of the info about the distance from Gallipoli and Lecce? Thank you very much Gianandrea |

I have no note on the source, but because my crew information is from the NVM, I am sure that also this location data comes form the same NVM.

Re: Ju 88A-4 of II./KG 1 lost on 10 july 1943
Hi all
In Ancestry place of death from Uffz Kirschnick is given as 10km W Gallipoli. According to the same source, Uffz Hermann is said to have belonged to 11/KG 1, but Uffz Kirschnick to 6/KG 1. In the GQM list, the unit is given as II/KG 1. For this reason, I suspect that the Roman numeral "II" was read as "11" by mistake and that it is actually II/KG 1, probably 6th squadron. best wishes JoMe |

Re: Ju 88A-4 of II./KG 1 lost on 10 july 1943
It is possible that the NVM has a wrong Gruppe. This NVM with five others marked with unit 11./KG 1. are at WASt in the same folder as II./KG 1 reports. Four of these, which have an aircraft code have V4+?M of 4./KG 1. However, without having a third source it is unadvised to change the unit.

Re: Ju 88A-4 of II./KG 1 lost on 10 july 1943
Matti and JoMe,
thank you both for the very interesting details. Another Ju 88A-4 crashed in the "Gulf of Tarent" was 8746 of 5./KG. I've got some details from the GQM but are known other informations about the position of the ditching? Thank you Gianandrea |

Re: Ju 88A-4 of II./KG 1 lost on 10 july 1943
Who has signed these NVM? 11/KG 1 was no way near Gallipoli. It was stationed at Schaulen near the Baltic sea. So Jochen has a point here.
