Wreck of Bf 109 G-6 help info

Dear Sirs,
We are a group of divers and last year we found the wreck of a Bf 109 G-6 under the sea level (- 27 mt.) in front of the town of Montalto di Castro (100 km North of Rome).
We think it might be the Bf 109 W.nummer 162739, piloted by H.J.Kautz, 3./JG 77, shut down on May 15, 1944.The plane was missing from that day. We're doing a series of studies to verify the news and we would like to know if anyone can provide a list of the Me 109 pilots shot down in Italy on May 15, 1944.
The Geschwader concerned are I./JG 77, I./JG 4, JG 51 based at Arlena (near my house) and the SG 4.
Can anyone help us?
Thanks in advance!Ascolta

Hi, I presume you made photos of the wreck and if yes, would you be so kind to share some with us here in TOCH?

TIA

Re: Wreck of Bf 109 G-6 help info

Dear all,
thank you for important information you have provided me. We hope to find the W.nummer, but research is very difficult because the water is very turbid (visibility 1.5 m -2) and the wreck is in very poor condition (for example, we did not find the fuselage).
We are also in touch with family Kautz. They told us that his flight partner (Richard Heller, 3./JG 77) said that probably the Kautz plane was shot down and fell into the sea. But no one has seen it.
I enclose a few photos: the DB 605 Engine matriculation, a rectangular part in were there is cut this letter and number: 2363 40658G un - F3 - 994, the bottom of the screwpropeller, a electric box, the partially visible matriculation of an MG 131.
Cheers VITTORIO

Re: Wreck of Bf 109 G-6 help info

Gradoli,v,

Thank you for posting the photos of your recovered Bf 109 artifacts on the forum.

At the risk of being redundant, I offer the following and hope it is of some interest.

Your first photo (the propeller hub) shows a Hersteller code (maker code) of “hzt,” representing:
VDM (Vereinigte Deutsche Metallwerke) Luftfahrtwerke A.G., Zweigniederlassung Werk 1, Hamburg-Großflottbek, Kluckstr. 4.

Your fourth photo is, I believe, of the engine block and illustrates:
DB 505 A-1 Werknummer 00201577, built by Pommersche Motorenbau, Stettin/Altdamm. There may be a three-letter Hersteller code of “hss” somewhere on the engine.

My database of Pommersche Motorenbau-built DB 605 A-1s consists thirty-six entries ranging from WNr. 00200165 to 00207907.

Re: Wreck of Bf 109 G-6 help info

Thanks, Steve, the information I have given are very interesting. However I have not seen the engine on the three-letter code that you told me. I saw another (in the attached photo).
On the cylinder head, there is another code (also in photo):
12972-793753-VII
9-605 100001.10
EZ 30
3205 4
What does this mean?

Re: Wreck of Bf 109 G-6 help info

Hello Steve,

Just a side question regarding the engine producer coded "002" in the engine serial number - are you sure it is the Pommersche Motorenbau GmbH?
The "hss" code was issued to Niedersächsische Motorenwerke GmbH (NiMo) and the "hst" were the Pommersche Motorenbau GmbH.

best regards,
Tomislav

Tomislav,

Yes, of course you are correct. The Hersteller code for POMO is “hst.” I shouldn’t type when I’m tired.
