Re: Again from the Spitfire crash site
Hello,
I take it that this crash site is in the Italian Region ? From what I see from the photo's it looks like it could be one of the following aircraft. Spitfire Mk.VIII JF809 - 607 Sqn SoC 31.5.45 JF819 - ADU - Ran out of fuel and crash landed Pantellaria 17.12.43 JF829 - 81 - Abandoned on T/O Ratmalana. JF839 - 67 - Amarda Road stalled on landing 9.3.44 JF849 - 155 - SoC 13.9.45 JF869 - RAAF JF879 - 601 - Flew into mountain on air test near Monte Virgine 30.3.44 JF889 - 81 - SoC 13.12.44 JF899 - 253 - SoC 11.4.46 According to "85 Years of the SAAF" Lt. C. C. Geldard is linked as pilot of JF879. CWGC has Lt. C. C. Geldard as date of death 30/3/1944 with 601 Sqn, he was from Carolina, Transvaal, SA. Re: Again from the Spitfire crash site
The "unknown part" is one of the cockpit canopy rails.
It would be interesting to know the details of the pilot. You say you have identified which pilot but have not told us what you found out! |
