JG 106 or FFS A/B 23

Hello !

Noon of the 3. January 1945 3 Arado Ar 96 were attacked by
6 P-51`s near Gutenzell / Upperswabia.
The Arado`s were started from airfield Baltringen.
All of the Arado`s were shoot down.

1. Lt. Erich Peiker KIA
2. Lt. Helmut Neuhaus KIA

The third Arado made a forced landing. Ofw. Heinrich Pfeffer and
Lt. Ludwig Grossberger were killed after leaving their Arado on ground.

I have found different informations concerning the unit of these Arado`s.
1./JG 106 or FFS A/B 23? Both is possible!!!
Can somebody enlighten me?

One P-51 was shoot down by friendly fire during these attacks.
Are these loss details correct?
Captain John Coonan POW
W-Nr. 33-14358
55. Fighter Group/38. Fighter Squadron

Thank you in advance!

Herzliche Grüsse aus Oberschwaben,

Wolfgang

"Double Nickel - Double Trouble - KIA, MIA, POWs, & Evaders of the 55th Fighter Group in WWII" by Robert M. Littlefield had details on this Mustang loss, including about the meeting of the victim and the perpetrator of the friendly fire in a POW camp.

Re: JG 106 or FFS A/B 23

Hello gentlemen!

I have a question to OFw. Heinrich Pfeffer.
I know that OFw. Pfeffer was fighter pilot before he became
flight instructor at JG 106. He was several times wounded and
lost one eye in an aerial combat.
He was decorated with EK 2, EK 1, fighter operational clasp,
wound batch and maybe a decoration from Rumania.
At Kracker i have found a Fw. Heinz Pfeffer which could fit.
Heinz or Heini are short forms from Heinrich.
Is this the same guy????

Thank you very much in advance!

Herzliche Grüsse aus Oberschwaben,

Wolfgang

Re: JG 106 or FFS A/B 23

Hello gentlemen!

Now I know that Heinz isn´t Heinrich!
Heinz Pfeffer was wounded as member of 9./JG 2 over France.
Heinrich Pfeffer was wounded in 1941 as member of 7./JG 52 over
Romania in an aerial combat with russian bombers. He lost his right eye.
Are there any additional informations available?

Thank you very much in advance!

Herzliche Grüsse aus Oberschwaben,

Wolfgang

Re: JG 106 or FFS A/B 23

38th/55th FG claimed 4 Ar-96 s/d at 12.45h in a combat (or more a „slaughter“) 10-15 miles SE of Ulm with Capt John F Coonan 1 victory, 1/Lt David H Courtney and 1/Lt John W Kavanaugh 1 victory shared, 2/Lt Robert Jones 1 victory, 1/Lt John W Kavanaugh 1 victory. It seems, that the 4th Ar.96 claimed was in fact Coonan´s P-51…
