Junkers Ju88 in Rye Bay 1940
Hi, can anyone help with the following report:
October 1940. a Junkers Ju88 is shot down by RAF Hurricanes of 603 Squadron and crashes into Rye Bay, 4 miles off Camber, East Sussex. All 4 crew members drowned. Sorry I don't have any further information.

Luftwaffe Crash Archives Vol 5 has the following: 4 October 1940 Ju88A-1 Wn 6116 coded L1+EP 6/LG1. At sea, off Jury's Gap, Rye, East Sussex. Aircraft was seen to crash into the sea whilst being pursued by 2 fighters. Gefr Peter Schoffmann 53548/236 Killed. Washed ashore at Dover on 18th November and now buried at Cannock Chase 5/71. Uffz H Kirchenbauer No Known Grave; UffzE Kroos NKG; Uffz W Jahn NKG.

Many thanks for your reply Icare9. I had wn 6116 as crashing in the channel 23Km off Dungeness. I will update my records.
Also, Gefr Peter Schoffmann (Bs) 53548/236, EM is 53578/236.

Thanks for the response. Presumably Nigel Parker obtained his information some while ago, so may need correction in any reprint.
Schoffmann is in CWGC Register as SchoEffmann for anyone attempting to trace. There may be an entry in the Dover Cemetery/ies Grave Registration Forms for his initial burial. |

in the Gen.Qu. loss documents are listed: Report from 6 October 1940 No.20: 4.10. II./LG 1 Feindflug, Ort: unbekannt, Ursache: unbekannt, Ju 88 A-1 6116 L1+EP, 100%. Uffz Kross vermisst Uffz Kirchbaur vermisst Gefr Jahn vermisst Gefr Schöffmann vermisst. First correction from 5 January 1941: Gefr Schöffmann gefallen. Second correction from 10 May 1942: Fw Jahn für tot erklärt. Regards Leo |
