Do 217 Loss Rennes 17-18 May 1943

An aircraft of 2./KG 2 briefed to attack Cardiff on the night of 17-18 May 1943 is reported to have crashed either at Rennes or 50km north of Rennes. The crew were all killed and buried but does anyone have a more accurate crash location or cause? The were no night fighter claims for Do 217s that night from what I can see

Re: Do 217 Loss Rennes 17-18 May 1943

In the GQM loss return no loss category is noted.
According to the KG 2 chronicle Vol. 2 of Ulf Balke the Do 217 E-4 WNr. 4392 was lost without enemy action, loss category 20, attributed to disorientation and lack of fuel. Quotation from page 230: "Darüber hinaus stürzen die Besatzungen Lt Polzer (2. Staffel) und Lt Preyer (6. Staffel) wegen Orientierungsverlust und Betriebsstoffmangel 50 km nördlich Rennes bzw. 10 km nordwestlich Vannes ab."

Leo
