USAAF L5 552 did it become a RAF aircraft ?
Hi,
The 9th TAC Daily journal mentions on 18/09/1944 Cpl.Kennedy Hq. Flight Section called about L-5 aircraft 552 that they had put in 23rd M R & R for repair. Also L-5 aircraft 639. 639 is ready to come back when Hq Sq finds location of 23rd M R & R. A British flyer took 552. Request reason. Checked with A-3. General Quesada lost L-5 aircraft 552 to Air Chief Marshall Liegh-Mallory in a crap game and is being used by Mallory now. What happened with this plane ? Did it become a RAF plane ? Many thanks and best regards Luc |

Re: USAAF L5 552 did it become a RAF aircraft ?
Must be one of these two
42-98552 - became G-AKYF in 1948 Or 42-99552 - became KJ391 |

Re: USAAF L5 552 did it become a RAF aircraft ?
Alex,
Many thanks for your replies. 42-99552 was part of a lend-lease batch. Is the information correct that 42-98552 was used by the RAF as LG552 and that this serial was not offical ? 'LG' could be lost game. Best regards Luc Last edited by Luc Vervoort; 30th August 2022 at 08:58. Reason: additional info |

Alex and Revi16,
Many thanks for the replies. On the link kindly supplied by Revi16 one of the entries mentions : There was a Stinson L5 operated in the UK with RAF markings at the end of the War, 42-98552, marked as 'LG552' (later became G-AKYF). Presumably an 'unofficial' transfer. best regards Luc |

Re: USAAF L5 552 did it become a RAF aircraft ?
Whatever use ACM Leigh-Mallory could make of the Sentinel, it was short lived. He died in the Avro York accident over France on 14 November 1944...
Later '552' RAF career, if any? Groet, Leendert Last edited by Leendert; 31st August 2022 at 08:13. |

So now it could either be 42-98552 or 42-99015 ?

Re: USAAF L5 552 did it become a RAF aircraft ?
The link kindly supplied by Revi16 also mentions in another reply :
Had a quick look in Air Arsenal North America, and it only mentions the LG552 one. No mention in the Flintham/Thomas codes book of a suitable 'FT' used post-war - nearest was 10 ANS, which used 'FFT' Hopefully someoneelse can come up with more! BTW, here's LG552! Looking for a scan of the info mentioned in Air Arsenal North America. Many thanks in advance Luc |
