Friendly Fire- C-54 shot down by Sea Hurricane

While going through my copy of MAW4, I found an interesting nugget of information.
In the information summary for January 8,1944, there is a listing for 824 Sq (presumably FAA) For 2 Sea Hurricanes credited with the shoot down of a US
C-54 in error. Does anyone know anymore about his incident

Re: Friendly Fire- C-54 shot down by Sea Hurricane

Hi,
I am surprised that the details are not in vol4.

See Air Brits "FAA Aircraft 1939-1945".
Sea Hurricane IIc - NF674 "R".
S/Lt. E. C. Godden
From HMS Striker.
C-54 was 41-37274
Date is given as 25/3/44.
" Cobra patrol round convoy SL152/MKS43 , with NF674 accidentally shot downUS C-54 41-37274 which was not showing IFF while end route Stephenville to Casablanca, 36°14' N 15°12' W, 25.3.44;".

The pilot of two later accidents with NF674 was S/Lt.Godden but his name is not linked to the 25.3.44 event. However perhaps the pilots kept with a particular a/c . In which case he would have been pilot on 25.3.437274 (MSN 3064/DO7) shot down by frendly fire over the Atlantic
Ocean Mar 25, 1944. 6 killed. It was shot down by British fighters because the C-54 was approaching a
ships convoy. The plane was carrying dive flap modification kits for P-38s.25.3.44( OR 8.1.44 ?). Which ever date is correct ?
The second Sea Hurricane was JS333 piloted by Lt. C.J.Allen. It is recorded that 824 Sqn received 6 Sea Hurricanes. Could have received further replacements over time ?

Also S/Lt.J.W.Hayes claimed a Ju290 on the 9 the January, 44 in NF670 "Q".
A fourth a/c was NF694 "U".

However JB's serial number site has a later date see -

37274 (MSN 3064/DO7) shot down by frendly fire over the Atlantic
Ocean Mar 25, 1944. 6 killed. It was shot down by British fighters because the C-54 was approaching a
ships convoy. The plane was carrying dive flap modification kits for P-38s.

Is there some confusion with the 9th January 44 Ju290 event and that of the 25th March 44 in MAW vol 4 ?
Alex

This C-54 shoot down was discussed on this forum in 2008, I noticed.

Many newspapers at the time ran versions of the story. Here is one:

I notice the date of the shootdown was March 25th. Why would this be shown on MAW4 on January 8th?

Re: Friendly Fire- C-54 shot down by Sea Hurricane

Hello,
As I noted in my earlier post perhaps the 8th January is in error and should be the 9th which would fit with the shooting down of the Ju290 ?
Any Luftwaffe expert have any details of a Ju290 loss on the 9th January '44 ?

Thanks
Alex
