Gerhard Lüty 8./JG52
Gentlemen,
Wondering if anyone has any information on Gerhard Lüty. I have the following: Lüty, Gerhard Oblt 28 victories 8/JG-52 (5/43 S.U.) Bf 109G-4 Werk # 19261 (lost 5/21/43), Bf 109G-4 Werk # 19341 "Black 3" (lost 7/8/43) POW 8 July, 1943 after being shot down in his G-4 at Ugrim. WIA 21 May, 1943 during aerial combat at Taman. His first known victory, a Soviet LaGG-3 on 3 May, 1943. Magnus, 28 victories. I have the Vernehmung written by Lüty on his action 21.5.43 Signed by Lüty and Rall. Does anyone know if Lüty survived as a POW? Cheers Bill |

Re: Gerhard Lüty 8./JG52
Nothing much to add, except that de Zeng/Stankey calls him Lüuty.
If you check there you will get a little more. His victory score is quite odd. In various lists he is credited with 28 claims, just as you say, but since he is not included in Johannes M's books, I checked another of his lists and to my surprise he is just credited with one claim by Johannes. Since this is a quite large discrepancy, I checked with Barbas and his III./JG 52 history and it seems someone in the past has simply just put the number of claims to this man's name as 28. So Barbas list him on page 224 with 28 claims, but in the detailed lists of all claims made he only appears once (on page 358) where he claimed his only victory on 3 May 1943 at 07.55H in PlQu 85181, a LaGG. I have no explanation for this, but hopefully others can fill in the blanks... Cheers Stig |

Re: Gerhard Lüty 8./JG52
He went MIA on 8-Jul-43. Supposedly a recipient of the DKiG. The Prien group 'Jagdfliegerverbande' series only show the single 3-May-43 claim as well.
