Bf109 Shot Down 9/10th July 1941

Hi,

Long shot and possible misidentification.

A Wellington crew claimed to have shot down a Bf109 over Holland on return from Osnabruck. Their report is pretty detailed and 3 of the crew positively identified a Bf109.

My question, any losses that night or reported damaged of a Bf109. And lastly if it was a Bf109, what unit would it have flown with. All bait vague I'm afraid.

TIA

Steve

Chris,

I think your right about the claim. But I am sure that they would have been able to identify a Bf109 over a Bf110, JU88 or Do215.

I am still trying to establish if any Bf109 units were operational this night.

Steve

JG 1, III./NJG 1, I./JG 3, I./JG 52, JG 53 were present in this area at that time and absolutely nothing matches. The JG 52 incident mentioned was engine failure-nothing more, nothing less.

Chris,

I think my previous post confirms what you said. I am just trying to establish what Bf109 units were operational at the time, nothing more, nothing less.

With established night fighters round and about that night making claims, I think the day fighters would have left it to them. Theo Boiten might like to comment but it was not normal for day fighters at this time to be used as night fighters

Re: Bf109 Shot Down 9/10th July 1941

No Luftwaffe single-engined day fighters operational by night in the summer of 1941, only twin-engined night fighters. All known info on documented NJ losses & NJ a/c damaged on ops are detailed in the NCA series.

Cheers, Theo

On 9-10 July 1941, a Bf110 D coded G9+EK of 2./NJG1 belly-landed at Blerik near Venlo at 03.00 hrs following air combat, the pilot Fw. Meier sustaining injuries. Does this fit to the 218 Sqn combat report Steve?
