Re: Carrier Trials for P-51s and B-25s, 1943/44
I have seen photos of Navy a/c that left their tails on the wire as well while the rest of the a/c carried on.
Some ~150 simulated carrier landings were carried out at Munstin before 414017 went to the Shangri-La. Bob Elder: Although I have had the privilege of several firsts' in qualifying Navy a/c aboard ship, none was more interesting and satisfying than my experience with the Mustang. |

Re: Carrier Trials for P-51s and B-25s, 1943/44
There is a story that the first Seafire from Cunliffe Owen lacked the usual strengthening parts. The squadron commander kept it polished as his personal aircraft, and enjoyed the superior performance whilst operating perfectly happily from the carrier. Sadly, when he went on leave it was allocated to a junior pilot, who wiped off the tail on his first landing.
Awkward interviews for some when the CO came back..... |

Mark -
According to Narrative and photos I referred to - The Trials were Successful. I 'm Wondering if your Photo is of the P -51 that Crash Landed on a Carrier during the Korean War? Mike |
