An organizational question about KG 28
Hi everyone,
I have a question about command organization concerning I.KG 28 which was assigned to Terespol in Poland from 19 July 1941 onwards...in documents I have seen the grouping of KG 26 and Kgr. 100, which were also based at Terespol at the same time as KG 28, were under the command of KG 28 for the raids on Moscow. (?) Can anyone shed light on these three Groups and if they were commanded by KG 28 or directly under the control of Luftflotte 2 ? Thanks in advance oquaigTD P { margin-bottom: KG 26 and Kgr. 100. |

Re: An organizational question about KG 28
This might help:
Stab/KG 28 (Second Formation) Formation; Air Offensive against England; Central Russia. (Dec 40 - Dec 41) Formed 22 Dec 1940, at Bordeaux-Merignac (or Nantes?) in W France, by renaming Stab/KG 40. Shortly after formation transferred to Nantes. While in France came under IX.Fl.Korps/Lfl.3 and exercised control over I./KG 28 and later III./KG 26 and KGr. 100. Tactical operations of subordinate Gruppen mainly involved minelaying and anti-shipping strikes off the SW coast of England and in the Irish Sea. Transferred via Terespol/E Poland to Bobruisk/C Russia 28 Jul – 2 Aug 41 (order issued 19 July) for reassignment to II.Fl.Korps/Lfl.2. Moved forward to Bobruisk and then to Seshchinskaya 7-10 Oct. Subordinated I./KG 28 while in Russia, with perhaps other bomber Gruppen being attached from time-to-time. Renamed Stab/KG 26 o/a 15 Dec 41 at Seshchinskaya. Re: An organizational question about KG 28
Thanks for the reply Larry,
and thanks for reminding me that "I own that book, maybe I should read it again" ;-). So essentially I.KG 28, III.KG 26 and Kgr. 100 acted as an improvised Kampfgeschwader and had done so for some time before arriving Terespol. Hope all is well with you oquaig |
