P-51D Radiator Question
When flying combat am I correct in assuming the radiator door on a P-51D would be open to cool down the hot engine? I have noticed that many people depict them closed in this scenario.
Strafing a train is the scenario I'm interested in....I think it would be open? Any ideas? Pathfinder |

Re: P-51D Radiator Question
Well, during a strafing run the flap would be either closed or very slightly open for the cooling system has to able to deal with the most severe condition, i.e. high power climb. It the flap was already fully or near fully open on level or diving flight, there might not be adequate cooling capacity for the climbing condition. Do note that that for normal operation it is automatically operated.
