Re: Searching for 151 RAF Squadron photos

Hi Phil This is a 151 Sqn. FB.VI HR250 ( DZ--P) in late 1944 after the D-Day stripes were removed from wings and upper fuselage; Medium Sea Grey / Dark Green, red codes partly overpainted. There is a black "P" in a white triangle under the nose. Later went to 29 Sqn.

151 Sqn... MK.II 4/42 to 7/43.
MK.XII 7/43 to 3/44.
MK.VI 8/43.
MK.XIII 12/43 to 9/44.
MK.VI 7/44 to 9/44.
NF.XXX 8/44 to 10/46.
Regards
Nick

Re: Searching for 151 RAF Squadron photos

Hi Nick,

Incredible ! This photo is fantastic ! Really fantastic ! It gives me an excellent account concerning this Squadron.
Is this Squadron major field of interest ? Please, do you know if 151 Squadon book exists ?
Thank you very much indeed for your precious help !
Phil.

Re: Searching for 151 RAF Squadron photos

Phil ...........I had to edit my post as this is an FB.VI not a MK.II. My mistake. As far as I know there is no history of 151 Sqn. I must admit my main interest is the USAAF and their colours ( you may know me from the Armyairforces.com web-site.)
For the record here are a few of 151's planes and serials.
Hurricane I P3650 DZ-H
Defiant I N1790 DZ-P
Hurricane IIc Z3224
Defiant II AA436 DZ-V
Mosquito II HJ655 DZ-V
Mosquito XII HK183 DZ-W
Mosquito XIII MM437 DZ-F
Mosquito FB.VI PZ201
Mosquito T.29 KA138
Mosquito NF.XXX MM800 DZ-V

Do you mean S/L Charles Cooke ? he flew Mosquitos with 151 and is thought to be the first Mosquito night fighter ace. His first claims were on Spitfires. There is a photo of him on a Spitfire. Not sure of squadron though.
Salut
Nick

Re: Searching for 151 RAF Squadron photos

Phil......if this is the right Cooke he flew Spitfires with 66 Sqn. in the BOB and then Mosquitos on 264 and 151 Sqns. Some sources say he had 4 claims in Spitfires and 2 (or 1.5) in Mossies.
In July 1986 Andrew Thomas did a feature on 151 Sqn. in " Scale Aircraft Modelling" ( 6 pages on WW2). If you want me to copy it send your home address by PM on Armyairforces.com.
My favourite RAF references are
"RAF Squadrons" (Jefford)
"The source book of the RAF" (Delve)
"The Squadrons of the Royal Air Force" (Halley)
"Flying units of the RAF" (Lake)
"British military aircraft serials" (Robertson).
Regards
Nick

Re: Searching for 151 RAF Squadron photos

Charles Alfred Cooke is listed in the supplement to "Aces High" as with 66 Sqn. in 1940, confirmed claims 2 x Ju.87s May 13, 1/3 Do.17 July 10, 1 x Me.110 Aug. 20, all in 66.
He was c/o 264 Sqn. in 1941 ( Defiants) then stayed on as a Flight Commander when they converted to Mosquitos in 1942. On the night of 30/31 July he shot down a Ju.88 in a Mosquito NF.II.
It seems his claim with 151 Sqn. wasn't confirmed.
