Storrar's Yak 9
Hi there!
There's a well-known photo of Jas Storrar's Yak-9 wearing his initials on the fuselage side in Italy in 1945. But where does this aircraft come from? Thanks. Chris |

Chris
There is quite a lot about this issue on the internet. This http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/Research/Y...rrar/index.php is possibly the most complete analysis. Steve |

Re: Storrar's Yak 9
It's odd the article only uses the unit code for the Yak.
Correct serial number is within the triangle, 72 7087, where the digits 72 stood for the type and 7087 was the actual serial number. Cheers Stig |

Re: Storrar's Yak 9
I'd say the complete serial number was 7015387. Plane No.87 of batch No.70 from Novosibirsk, Factory No.153. Based on the batch No. (plus the cockpit), this was a Yak-9M.

Re: Storrar's Yak 9
Thanks Gabor
What you quote is the manufacturer's construction number which is not quite the same as a military (Air Force) serial number, ie the military registration if you like. During the period we are interested in here, I would say only Germany, Russia and Japan used their manufacturers own numbers as references. All other nations at war used their own specifically invented system. This Yak-9M from Bulgaria is still using their pre-war/wartime system. I have no records regarding exactly which Yaks they received and it is interesting to see they used in this case a corruption of the actual manufacturer's number. Usually Bulgaria used digits from 1 and up (ie in this case I would have guessed 7001 and up). Do you have other such manufacturer's numbers for Bulgaria? Cheers Stig |
