Questions about 79 Sqdn Hurricane's.
Hello,
Have been looking at the Hurricane's used by 79 Squadron following the earlier thread about the ID of a captured Hurricane. I have the following - N2426 - Lost 05/40. What have we about this Hurricane ? N2483 - AB L1000/N9999 has - 33 Sqn/71 OTU. [ BUT - 79 Sqn Sgt H Cartwright crash landed near Braine-le-Comte 16/05/40 ( 12 Days in May and FCL vol 1 revised)]. ? P2635 - Lost France 05/40. What have we about this Hurricane ? Alex |

Hi Alex,
according to the reply given by Joss Leclercq on http://www.aerostories.org/~aeroforu...p?nummsg=63984 Details on P2635 are : AIR 81/398 Pilot Officer L L Appleton: missing presumed dead; Hurricane P2635 failed to return from an operational flight over the Nivelles area, Belgium, 14 May 1940 HTH bertrand |

Re: Questions about 79 Sqdn Hurricane's.
Hello Bertrand,
Thank you for your swift reply it is welcome to open this serial number debate. Both FCL vol 1 revised and 12 Days in May have - 11th May 79 Sqn P/O Appleton unhurt in L2049. 14th May 79 Sqn P/O Appleton as + in P2537. So for both events no mention of P2635. With regard to the link you gave it does say that Appleton was in P2537 but then P2635 is raised as a possibility as it is referenced in Air 81 ? Alex |

Hi Alex
Please note that '12 Days in May' is rather dated - maybe time for a re-write! Cheers Brian |

N2483 is not listed anywhere as lost in France in 1940. Either it never went or it returned to UK safely. Cheers Stig |

Re: Questions about 79 Sqdn Hurricane's.
Sgt CARTWRIGHT's Hurricane crash-landed 2 km North of Rčves (10 km SW of Nivelles), not Braine-le-Comte. It was recovered by civilians, dismantled but 'liberated' by Germans... in August '44.

Re: Questions about 79 Sqdn Hurricane's.
Hello ClinA -78,
But was it N2426 or N2483 ? Could this Hurricane be the one that was hidden in a shed ? Alex |

Re: Questions about 79 Sqdn Hurricane's.
This Hurricane at Rčves, whatever its serial, was hidden in a barn. There is at least two pictures of it. Unfortunately no serial seen...
