He115/Do24 rescue 5 July 1942 PQ-17

Hi guys

Can anyone provide information on the rescue of some of the American freighter SS Carlton's crew on 5 July 1942, during the ill-fated Allied convoy to Russia.

Apparently a He115 of I./906 alighted near to a cluster of survivors on board lifeboats and life-rafts, and rescued two seamen. A Do24 was despatched to the area and picked up ten more, followed by a second (or the same Do24) which also rescued ten men, and finally another He115 (or the original) arrived and rescued two more. The remaining Americans were left behind and reached the Russian coast.

My questions: who were the pilots of the He115s and Do24s? Is this story from the German side tucked away somewhere?

Any help appreciated.
Cheers
Brian

Re: He115/Do24 rescue 5 July 1942 PQ-17

From the KTB of Seenotdienstführer 5 (Norwegen) it is said that two americans were rescued by He 115 8L+HH of Staffel 1./406 (the plane still carried the unit markings of its previous unit Staffel 1./906). Shortly after a further 18 were picked up by Dornier Do 24T-2 W.Nr. 0042 CM+IH of 5. Seenotstaffel and 12 by Dornier Do 24T-2 W._Nr. 0047 CM+IM also from 5. Seenotstaffel.

No mention of a further two americans. All in all 32 americans rescued unhurt or with minor injuries.
