Anything new on this, anyone? My family is still wondering what happened to Jack Jr. I hope that by posting occasionally I may cause some new clue to turn up.

Re: P-38 J, 42-67940, 485.fs

I can confirm he flew Bf109G-14/AS for 15./JG4 around that time. He belly landed G-14/AS yellow 16 on 5/12/44, so I guess it is unlikely he flew that a/c on 14/12, unfortunately. Yellow would be the correct code colour for 15. Staffel.
But note that the Gruppe also had G-10 and K-4 on hand at that time.
According to the Il2 site at Asisbiz IV./JG4 used the ~ marking, but to contradict that there is a profile at Wings Palette (wp.scn.ru) showing a 14./JG4 G-14/AS flown by Scheufele on 3/12/44 with black 2+ and no trailing marking. Not sure how reliable that is, though.
Osprey's Bf109 Defence of the Reich Aces shows a profile of Scheufele's G-14/AS from October 1944 with black 13+~
Hope this helps a bit at least.
Peter
