RAF No. 11 Group Circus 40 - 08-July-41 Losses

I am attempting to ascertain details of the Spitfire losses incurred by RAF No 11 Group 'Circus 40' on 08-July-1941.

A claim was submitted by Oberfeldwebel Brunkhorst of 9./JG2 for a Spitfire over Calais at 15:48.

Can anyone possibly identify the Spitfire aircraft involved?

Any help whatsoever will be very well received indeed.

Regards Richard.

Hi Richard

If you go to http://lesbutler.co.uk/claims/tonywood.htm you will be able to download the relevant information either in word or pdf format for all of 1941 - it is quite extensive for 8 July, but the summary is:

Summary for Circus 40 at 15.30 on 8th July 1941 to Lille. Fighters taking part: 19 squadrons, 218 sorties, 11-3-2 claimed for 7 lost. Bombers taking part: 3 Stirlings of 3 Group. Ref: RAF/FC Summary of Sorties (Air 16/1307)

hope this helps

Allan

Many thanks indeed Allan.

I am away from my files and folders etc at the moment, so I will have a check later to see if there are any recorded Spitfire losses on that day.

Regards Richard.

Re: RAF No. 11 Group Circus 40 - 08-July-41 Losses

Pleased to help a fellow Cornwall resident

FCL vol 1 specifically shows 2 145 squadron losses in Circus 40, with no times shown merely "Circus 40 FTR pm" and "Circus 40 shot down pm"

Spitfire Va - no serial - P/O P R Prime (RCAF) - missing (PoW?) and Spitfire Va - R7218 - + - F/O J Machecek

Really sorry in my late reply.

Many thanks indeed for your help with the details of the 2 Spitfire aircraft you mentioned.

I hope to soon be able to spend some time trying to narrow down the possible victim of Brunkhorst's Bf-109 on that day from the link you provided.

Regards Richard.
