74 Sqn Pilots

Does anyone know the fates or combat history of Sgts Rex Mallet & Jamie Dykes who were on 74 Sqn in Apr 41?

Re: 74 Sqn Pilots

I have just found out that Rex was on 72 Sqn, then to 74 Sqn before returning to 72 so can anyone now add any information on him?

Hi Chris,

Dykes was with 72 Sqn until March 1942, as P/O.

Regards,
Michal

Re: 74 Sqn Pilots

Hi there,
I have F/Lt Charles Frank Rex Mallett, VR 75074/144634.
Promoted from W/O to P/O 7-1-43. 30-9-43 to F/O & 30-9-45 to F/lt.
I have he was with 43 sqn from as early as 10-11-40 until 5-12-40, he possibly was with 43 sqn into early 1941.
Posted from 74 sqn to 72 sqn at Acklington 1-7-41.
I have on 21-11-41 Sgt CFR Mallett with 1 ADJ Flt in Spitfire I, N32931 on flight from Usworth to Kirton in Lindsey force landed at Bolen, near Darlington, Co Durham. due to bad weather & became lost. Landed with u/c retracted. Cat C. Pilot not to blame as no VHF or other nav aids available.
Another source reported N32931 was part of 52 OTU when this happened.
I had a letter from Peter May (74sqn) that James Dykes travelled fom 74 sqn to London and during an air raid was not seen again.
Roy

Re: 74 Sqn Pilots

I know this thread is somewhat old but should anyone be interested, both Mallett and Sgt James Edward Townley Dykes (who was commissioned in 1942 as well-748722) survived the war
