Re: 162nd TRS F-6D Serial 44-14??? IX * P (or B, R)
With the photo being taken in June, there is a chance this plane was taken on by the 162nd TRS post-war from another unit, so looking just for 44-14's and possibly "Mary" in the war-time 162nd list of aircraft may need to be expanded. If there would any way at all of at least seeing the nose/name, it would be a help. I have a "Marge" with the 162nd and since it is unclear if "Mary" is the name, a visual aid would be most helpful.

There were a number of Marys or Mary + another word. A photo showing just the nose portion would be useful.

Attached is the part that shows the marking on the cowling. I now believe it was not a name like Mary, but maybe a roman numeral or something else. Let me know your thoughts.

Re: 162nd TRS F-6D Serial 44-14??? IX * P (or B, R)
For me the rearmost shape looks like a cartoon figure shape in profile facing forward with a large head and an open mouth. The cowling panel normally fitted below the exhausts seems to be perched on top of the engine and may well have some kind of inscription/name painted on it....

I'm seeing what appears to be writing on a propeller blade, otherwise nothing.

Re: 162nd TRS F-6D Serial 44-14??? IX * P (or B, R)
From the Joe Baughers USAAF serial number series.
"44-14073 (F-6D, 162nd TRS, attached to Provisional Reconnaissance Group, 9th AF) in landing accident at Nancy/Azelot airfield A-95 Azelot, France Jan 5, 1945. Pilot survived, aircraft badly damaged, unknown if repaired". So must have been repaired and issued to the 364FG .Or was with the 364 FG and transferred to the 163 TRS ? |
