Re: Italian loss June 10th 1943, Mediterranean?
Thanks Gianandrea
It is irritating that all previous Italian sources report this incident on the 9th isn't it? Is the date 10th simply taken to correspond with the British ORB of the 14Sq? I know, I know.....but somehow I don't like anomalies. Can we 100% in such a case the ORB is correct? In the best of worlds with dedicated clerks (Staff) yes of course, but real life is never that simple. I am not against a theory that the OPS actually was on the 13th, that is Italian docs are correct and the British are wrong.... Many thanks also for checking the S.82 loss. Indeed it looks like a mechanical loss of some kind. Cheers Stig |

Re: Italian loss June 10th 1943, Mediterranean?
Stig,
You are right but I think that the date of the ORB plus the report of the Tenente Bernini published by M. Civoli (whose book cover only the italian side of the operations and is unlikely that the date was changed) plus the fact that the area is the same (off Leghorn-SSW of Capraia Island), plus the lack of claim on 9 june make me believe that the right date is 10 june. Ciao Gianandrea |

Hello,
in the allied daily "Operational and Intelligence Summary" nr. 111 of 1943, it's mentioned: Day 10 June. Additional. ... g. Marauders formerly reported on ren. in TYRRENIAN sea add report that they attacked an SM-79 which crashed in sea. |

Re: Italian loss June 10th 1943, Mediterranean?
After a little bit of digging I found NC 30015 was 223-10, formerly I-ESTE and I-OSTE of Ala Littoria and 605-6, and had served in Russia before coming to the Mediterranean. Loss date is also given as June 9th.
From: http://www.italiankits.it/doratism73.html It was one of the Wright Cyclone powered S.73 versions, according to an article in Issue No.93 of in Avions Magazine, December 2000. Regards Simon |
