3 September 1944 Do217 destroyed at Grimbergen airfield,Belgium by 365 FG ( flying with P47’s)

Hi,

The Oprep A report no.157A for 3 September 1944 mentions that 6 squadrons missions were dispatched (armed recce in Mons area in support of the Fifth Corps and the 9th Armored Division), with at 6th mission :

Take-off 1518, 11 A/C; Capt.R.E.Young leading. No bombs were carried. One (1) Do 217 destroyed on ground by Capt. Young at an A/D north of Brussels (at J-6365), A/C exploded.

The location J-6365 is ,after conversion, the airfield of Grimbergen.

Are any additional details about this Do 217 available ?

Many thanks and best regards

Luc

Grimberghen was a well-developed grass surface auxiliary field specifically intended for fighters. So, the Do 217 may have been a stray that took refuge there so as to avoid the main airfields that received more attention from enemy aircraft than the secondary airfields, or, it may have been damaged and made an emergency landing there. KG 2, of course, was the primary user of the Do 217 in that area.

Do217 is very precise. Is it only pilot observation or other facts?

KG 2 had all but returned to Germany or been shot down or badly damaged in combat. A number were destroyed by strafing that day at Gilze and Soesterberg but with no crew casualties, any further details are unknown

Chris,

Many thanks for your reply and information.

The Luftwaffe departed from the airfield of Grimbergen around that date, so it is possible that it was an non-airworthy aircraft.

Best regards

Luc,

For 1944 the losses are not complete at all, especially if no human casualties were involved. It may have been an intact plane. Are you sure it was a Do 217, claims are not always accurate.
