Seeking info on Do17 crash during 1940 Western Campaign with codes ??_GK

Hello,

This photo auctioned today on eBay and might carry the code ??+GK. This appears to be a Do17Z, which would make the likely codes U5+GK, 5K+GK or 3Z+GK. There is a small village in the background that might be recognizable to someone. I'm not aware of other photos of this a/c in the EOE Data Base. Can anyone help ID this one, which probably came down in Belgium or France during 5 or 6.40?

Thanx,

Re: Seeking info on Do17 crash during 1940 Western Campaign with codes ??_GK

Hello,

Thanx Robert. Here is our EOE Loss list for possible loss on May 10, 1940:

"May 10, 1940: Stab KG3 Dornier Do17Z. Shot down by F/Lt Walker, F/O Brown, F/O Kilmartin, F/O Richey, and Sgt Soper of No.1 Squadron during reconnaissance sortie over Etain-Rouvres and belly-landed at Mont-St-Martin, north of Longwy, 6.30 a.m. BM Uffz Rolf Wagner killed. FF Oberfw Hans Schachtebeck, BO Oberfw Karl Sommer, and BF Uffz Wilhelm Schmeis captured wounded – all later released. Aircraft 100% write-off."

If this is our May 10th loss, this will be in France just over the border from the SW tip of Luxembourg. All the rifle-caliber bullet holes would be consistent with an attack by British fighters, and a dead/wounded crew. With this info, someone may be able to determine if the houses and woods in the background match a location in that area. Who can help confirm this one?

I would have expected this a/c to have carried the Stab KG 3 shield on the nose, but other views of this crash, now linked to this code in our DB, do not show this.

Regards,
