Airfields 43rd Fighter and 23rd Mixed aviation divisions operate from last half July 1941

Hi Guys,
I am looking for information on which airfields the 43rd Fighter Aviation Division and the 23rd Mixed Aviation Division operated from from 16 July 1941 thru at least mid August 1941. Any info on sources welcome. Russian text not a problem for me.

Hi,

This site may have the right info:

http://allaces.ru/cgi-bin/s2.cgi/sssr/struct/main.dat

You may have to check the individual regiments attached to the air divisions to find the locations.

Hope this helps

Henry

Thanks Henry,

I've using this site for four years now and I have yet to find anything better. Unfortunately V.V.Karin (the man who runs the site) does not help. Although he is open to new data.

Re: Airfields 43rd Fighter and 23rd Mixed aviation divisions operate from last half July 1941

Jan-Jun 41: 23 SAD in Moscow MD.
6 Jul 41: HQ 23 SAD at Rzhev; its 170 IAP intercepted German formations in the Orsha area.
17 Jul 41: 23 SAD in support of Soviet 19th Army in the Smolensk area. OB included: 169 IAP, 170 IAP, 209 BAP.
Aug 41: HQ 23 SAD now at Olsufyevo/60 km NW of Bryansk in support of 28th Army. OB included: 61 ShAP, 169 IAP, 213 BAP.

Jan 41: 43 IAD/Western Special MD with HQ at Orsha. OB included: 129 IAP and 162 IAP.
22 Jun 41: 43 IAD/Western Special MD with HQ probably still at Orsha - deployed on airfields between Minsk and Smolensk. (Bergstrom-v.1:268). The division was virtually untouched in the initial German air attacks on 22 and 23 Jun. (G/K-v.1:96).
24 Jun 41: engaged in large air battle over Minsk, filing many claims. (Bergstrom:55).
25 Jun 41: 43 IAD/West Front attacked German columns near Grodno. (Wagner:39). OB in late Jun/early Jul included: 30 IAP, 160 IAP, 161 IAP and 163 IAP; these were joined by 32 IAP later in Jul.
23-25 Jul 41: 43 IAD supported counterattacks in the Roslavl’-Yartsevo sector. (Wagner:55).
12 Aug 41: 43 IAD, previously assigned to support Soviet 4th Army, now supporting 19th Army around Smolensk.

[Unless otherwise indicated, the above is all from German daily FULA Berichten and therefore considered reasonably accurate.]

Still you've provided something more to consider.

Here is what I know up to now:

43rd IAD composed of 160 IAP, 161 IAP (Balbasovo), 162 IAP (Mogilev-Edino) and 163 IAP (Mogilev-Lubnitse) (http://www.allaces.ru/cgi-bin/s2.cgi/sssr/struct/p/iap160.dat , 161iap.dat, 162iap.dat, 163iap.dat; Boevoi I Chislennie Sostav Voenno Vozhdushnik Sil Krasnoi Armii (also known as the VVS statistical Digest. Thank you again Jack Sanders!)or BiChs; Dmitrii Khazanov’s “Stalin’s Falcons” or Khazanov; Kalashnikov, Feskov et al…”Red Army in 1941” , or Kalashnikov; and Feskov’s 2006 update at
http://soldat.ru/files/f/00000654.xls or Feskov; plus others not least being Black Cross Red Star)

The 160th and 161st and 163rd IAPs went to Minsk on 23 June and fell back to Mogilev on 27 June. Here 161st and 162nd IAPs handed over it remaining aircraft to 160th IAP and went to the rear to reform. 162nd IAP went to Baranovichi on 23 June and was torn to pieces by Stab.IV/JG 51 and SKG 210. by 25 June it was at Sloboda (32 km East of Minsk) by 27 June was back in Mogilev where its last aircraft went to 160th IAP and was withdrawn to be reformed. (Allaces.ru.; BiChs; Khazanov; Kalashnikov; Feskov)
On 27 June 41st IAP from 9th SAD was assigned to 43rd IAD again at Mogilev.
170th IAP sent to Mogilev from 23 SAD 23 June and assigned to 43rd IAD (Allaces.ru. iap170.dat)

1 July 43rd IAD consisted of 41st, 160th and 170th IAP.

41st IAP withdrawn to Moscow PVO 4 July (Allaces.ru. iap41.dat)
170th FAR, transferred to 23rd SAD on 4 July and based at Smolensk airfield on the northern city limits.
The 160th FAR, presumably transferred its remaining aircraft to the 170th FAR was taken to the rear (Shatalovo ?) to reequip with LaGG 3s. Back in front 11 July. (Allaces.ru. iap160.dat)
This transfer left the 43rd FAD with no operational units. The Headquarters was taken into West Front reserve and withdrawn to (Shatalovo ?) to await the arrival of fresh fighter regiments. Back in front 11 July.
32 IAP arrives 11 July. (Allaces.ru. iap32.dat)

Smolensk and Pochinok (Shatalovo 5 km to the south) both fall on 16 July. Here I can see 43rd IAD falling back to Roslavl and I know for a fact that 47th SAD withdrew to Shaikovka after Guderian attacked Roslavl…but after this where did 43rd IAD go?

47th SAD came from Orel Military District and consisted of the 169th IAP and the 8th , and 140th SBAP. 47th SAD moved to Roslavl on 23 June with the 140th SBAP. The 8th SBAP remained behind to reequip with 40 Su-2s. The (allaces.ru; Kalashnikov; Feskov)

169th IAP went to Priyamino Airfield 30 km east Borisov on 23 June and was assigned to 23rd SAD. Fell back on Orsha on 27 June (Allaces.ru. iap169.dat)

23rd SAD was base in Kalinin and commanded all the VVS units in Kalinin Oblast Moscow Military District. It originally had the 170th IAP and the 99th SBAP (didn’t go to front until 21 August as part of 1st RAG). The 213th and 214th SBAPs were forming but not yet operational. (allaces.ru; Kalashnikov; Feskov)

23rd SAD came forward to Orsha 23 June. (allaces.ru)

170th IAP sent to Mogilev from 23 SAD 23 June and assigned to 43rd IAD (allaces.ru)

401st IAP joins 23rd SAD at Balbasovo on 30 June. (allaces.ru)

The 169th IAP, had already withdrawn to Orsha on 27 June. (allaces.ru)

430th ShAP which arrived at Zubovo airfield on 3 July. (allaces.ru)

Balbasovo, main airfield at Orsha fell to the Germans on 9 July.
430th ShAP was forced to move from Zubovo, which was now in artillery range of 46th Motorized corps, the 169th falling back to Smolensk, 401st IAP falling back to Gorki airfield 45 km to the southeast and the 430th ShAP to Yakovlevichi airfield 10 km to the east of Zubovo. (allaces.ru)

Gorki falls on 12 July the and 401st IAP and 430th ShAP
falling back to and the 430th ShAP. (allaces.ru)

At this point it consisted of only the 32nd and 160th IAP and the later was withdrawn to refit on 3 August. The 33rd IAP coming in as a replacement on 5 August.

As for 23rd SAD I can only find 169th IAP at Olsuf’evo;
209th SBAR was part of VVS 22nd Army. (allaces.ru)

Good luck - you know far, far more about the details of the subject than probably anyone else in the universe! Maybe some of the Russian members here have additional information that would be helpful.

Thanks Larry,
Knowing a bit of Russians helps, but the best Russian links I've had so far come from this web site.

All the best
