Jeez, I didn't want to open that can of worms again!

There's really nothing "can of worms" about it... ... you just have to be able to accept what Nick Beale said earlier. It comes down to being able accept that your childhood/adolescent hero was just a human being

Re: German night fighter top aces by plane

Hello Michel,

very good question.
And has the top Do 17 nightfighter ace more or less Do 17 kills than Otto Köhnke's 7 ?

Re: German night fighter top aces by plane

Nick and all

About some claims of Lippert

15/05/40

French losses:
Capt.Veniel MB-152 n°178 (Y-665)"1" damaged (360 impacts!!) never reparaid
Lt.Brun MB-152 n°122 (Y-609)"3" shot down "Fraillicourt" (53 km sud Charleville)
A/C Autier MB-152 n°189 (Y-676)"6" shot down "Monthermé"
Adj.Munier MB-152 n°164(Y-651)"9" shot down "Monthermé"

not necessarily Autier, but one of these 4

20/05/40

Curtis n°38 "Stenay" GC I/5 and not II/4 Capt.Malaval
Curtis n°86 "Peronne" GCI/4 Sgt Forzy and not I/5

Risky to assert Sgt Forzy to Lippert

Other claim,same time,place:

Ofw.Schmid (1/JG2) one curtis "Peronne" 18h35

20/06/40

A/C Crocq MB-152 n°378"8" forced to land
S/C Guitard MB-152 n°361 ? "11"

Impossible to assert Guitard to Lippert

Same time,place:

20 Curtis-Bloch shot down and 16 Curtis claimed by I(J(/LG2),I/JG53,III/JG53,I/JG26,Stab/JG3),III/ZG26

09/06/40

Not Proult but BOULT SUR SUIPPES (51) near Reims (51)

A/C Plubeau Curtis n°218 shot down between ROIZY (08) and SAULT-SAINT-REMY.
S/Lt Guillou Curtis n°215 damaged

claimed also by Lt Tonne I/JG53

BUT in Reality 2 Bloch 152 of GC II/6 shot downs by Lippert and Tonne "Reims" near boult sur suippes
Adj Laguet Bloch n°?
S/Lt Riss Bloch n°?

Ludwig Becker....? Held and Nauroth seemed to think so, even if they are an old source

Re: German night fighter top aces by plane

I´m very curious about victories for the Fw 189 and Fw 58. Konter with the Fw 58 and Scheer on the Fw 189?

The top scorer in this type is more likely Rudolf Schoenert. He made at least 27 of his 65 total claims with the Do-217. 25 of these night victories were scored in Russia with I/NJG 100,while the other 2 were acheived in the west.
I hope this helps clarify the issue.

Dear Russ,

thanks for your figures which fit well: 25 NJG100 kills in a Do 217, 6 NJG100 kills in a Ju 88.
Can you tell me which two of Schoenert's Western Front kills were scored in a Do 217 ?

Have a nice weekend,

Michael

The serial of F/Sgt Pridgeon's Lancaster was definitely "W4956". W4756 fell within a black-out block. W4956 was on it's 1st op, it only had 13.00 hours up on the clock.

The No.460 Sqn RAAF ORB F.540 (p.401 of 965), correctly identifies the Lancaster as W4956, but the F.541 (p.437 of 965), incorrectly refers to it as, W4966. Whatever the coding (AR or UV), the individual letter was "J".
