John Francis Williams
Dear All,
Does anyone happen to know the religious denomination of John Francis Williams, murdered by the Gestapo after the Great Escape? The site devoted to him says: 'By the end of 1942 John Williams had received 29 letters from his girlfriend and there had been 147 letters in all. He writes that a Red Cross parcel had arrived with a Christmas pudding which they were looking forward too. He is also attending church services 'This morning brought forth another of our usual good services and very good padre'.' I'm not a native speaker of English and the definition of a padre I have found which fits in this context is that of a military chaplain (of any denomination). I searched the Internet for chaplains who had served in Stalag Luft in Sagan, and there had been actually a few of them. However, I wonder if John was Anglican, Catholic, or maybe of still another Christian denomination. |
