Re: A.D.I.(K) Report: Fw 190 A-8 Black 11 I./JG 2 Bodenplatte Loss
That sounds like a great souvenir! Such parts with known history are a time capsule.
I think I can now confirm the W.Nr. as 173880. It is mentioned in the Crashed Enemy Aircraft Report No. 266, dated 16 January 1945: Fw 190 A-8, Place: Elsenborn, Markings: 11 + (black outlined white) W.Nr. 173880, Engine: BMW 801 D No. 329051, Remarks: Looted. Elsenborn was just about 30 km from Eupen. Since 173880 was a W.Nr. within a known W.Nr. batch, this is presumably the correct W.Nr. and not the one reported by NVM and RL2-III-1172 (173188). One mystery solved, but I need to continue looking for 173078... Cheers, Roger |

Since 173880 was a W.Nr. within a known W.Nr. batch, this is presumably the correct W.Nr.There are sometimes mistakes in A.I.2(g) reports: they did not always find an identification plate; they might be reading from damaged pieces of metal so numbers or letters were not always intact; elsewhere it seems that whoever typed the report misread a handwritten note or misheard what somebody said. |

Re: A.D.I.(K) Report: Fw 190 A-8 Black 11 I./JG 2 Bodenplatte Loss
Roger,
You are probably correct. 173880 is mentioned in CEA No. 265 dated January 29th 1945 (not the report you mention). It is marked as looted which is a good indication it bellylanded. Strange that no JG 2 RVT markings are mentioned. Perhaps CLINA-78 can tell us more about the location of the picture he has and if that matches with Elsenborn. Also if yellow-white-yellow bands are visible. Regards, John |

Re: A.D.I.(K) Report: Fw 190 A-8 Black 11 I./JG 2 Bodenplatte Loss
173880 was thus a good bait.
The pic was given to me by a Belgian military guard, taken in '45 when the wreck was still laying, but little by little looted, on the flat landscape of Elsenborn. No tail band. No landmark. ClinA-78 |
