Photos of RWD 14 (Czapla)
Hello
The only photographs I have seen of this aeroplane show the Polish prototype, or those flown later by Romania. I am not very up-to-date - so have any photographs ever been printed showing the RWD 14 in service with the Lot.Wojsk. during 1939? Graham

Few shots of wrecked aircraft eg. in Polish aircraft losses 1939 album by Mirage. Polish photos taken in 1939 are extremally unique, most shots coming from Germany.

All those are prototypes as indicated by light coloured rudders. They are commonly believed to be light blue but I would not be surprised if they were silver actually. |

Re: Photos of RWD 14 (Czapla)
Hello
I have a question. What underside colour was used on RWD 14 Czaplas in 1939? I have an old Mikro72 model on it, purchaed when I visited Warsaw in early 80s and still laying undisturped in its box. its instructions say that the colour was pale blue but in Thomasz J. Kopanski's PZL.23 Kara´s book colour profiles show PZL.23s with light gray/bare metal undersides. TIA Juha |

It is simple question but the answer is both simple and complicated. Polish aircraft of the period were painted in simple scheme of khaki and light blue grey for combat aircraft and overall khaki (mostly) or silver for trainers. Exception were Lublin observation aircraft which had a three tone camouflage and silver undersurfaces. The problem is with actual shades used. Early PZL aircraft like P-11 or P-23 had a dark khaki fading into something similar to british Dark Earth and light blue comparable to RLM 76 fading into light grey. It is believed somewhere in 1937-38 paint formula changed and khaki turned slightly more greenish. It is confirmed both by colour photos of the aircraft and some bits of Los I have seen. I would compare the colour to the fresh WWII US Army Olive Drab. Colour used on PWS was similar to the one of early PZL but a little bit lighter and perhaps not fading so strongly. There is no sample of RWD colours known to me. Generally I would say colours should be dark olive brown and light blue grey for a factory fresh aircraft. |
