1 October 1941 Dieppe

Does anyone know which RAF squadron or squadrons that on 1 October 1941 strafed the 3rd R-boat (Raumboot motorminesweeper) Flotilla off Dieppe causing 10 KIA and 36 WIA? This is from an artical in Warship 2002-2003. Other articals in earlier issues of this magazine deal with the German, Rumanian, and Russian Navies in WW II and could be usefull sources for books like the BCRS series.

Re: 1 October 1941 Dieppe

Hi James

Heres what the 615 Sqn ORB says about the attack:-

1-10-41
MANSTON
Dawn and dusk patrols each by two aircraft. The almost daily ‘beat up’ this time was an attack on eight ‘E boats’ off Dieppe which were successfully shot up. Several of them were stationary, and flames and smoke were seen coming from one of the boats as the Squadron left the scene. One section patrolled base but did not sight any enemy aircraft. Training included local formation flying by two sections of three, there were also two air tests.

Hurricane IIb Z3741 S/L Gillam 17:05 – 18:15 Shipping Attack
Hurricane IIb Z5545 F/L P.H.Hugo “ “ “ “
Hurricane IIb Z3556 Sgt Potts “ “ “ “
Hurricane IIb Z3348 P/O McCormack “ “ “ “

Hurricane IIc Z3081 Sgt Willis “ “ “ “
Hurricane IIb Z3747 F/O Aldous “ “ “ “

Would there be any chance of you borrowing the book again?
Cheers

Re: 1 October 1941 Dieppe

Hello David
Warship 2002-2003 pp. 57 and 59: on 1 Oct. 40 , R-boats of the 3rd Flotilla were sweeping off Dieppe, when they were suddenly attacked by a swarm of British planes. In few minutes the boats had lost 40% of their crews, killed or wounded. The Commander of the 2nd Security Division, Kapitän zur See Weniger, the Flotilla Leader Kapitänleutnant Rossow, 2 officers and 8 seamen were killed, 20 were seriously and 16 slightly wounded.

Re: 1 October 1941 Dieppe

Hello David
there have been a long series of articles on Kriegsmarine’s ships in Warship magazines by IIRC P. Hevreux but IIRC only in this R-boat article there is much info on air attacks against them. I’m not sure on the TA (German war booty torpedo-boats, almost all ex-Italian. Torpedoboat is a ship, like a small destroyer, not a motor torpedo boat) article, but they served in Med. I also cannot remember if there was info on air attacks in the Torpedoboat article, KM T-boats were active also in the Western Europe waters. Even in the article on auxiliaries IIRC there isn’t much probably nothing on air attacks against them, only on their surface actions, mostly against Allied MTBs. And that article handles also the Vorpostenboots, which Allied airmen usually called flakships. But if You are not in the hurry I can check the R-boat article for You after mid July if You have specific dates on which You are interested in. I have a couple projects under work now and I’m going to visit NA at Kew in late April so I’m rather busy now.

Juha
